mmc bakes buttercream cake san diego custom cakes chula vistaI really enjoyed making this simple, yet beautiful, three-tier buttercream cake with handmade fondant roses for a 90th birthday last weekend.  Ninety is definitely a reason to celebrate; what a blessing!

When I was asked to make this cake to feed about 60 people, I received a photo of a classic buttercream cake with simple piped details & real roses.  I had something else in mind, and sent the client pictures of rustic wedding cakes to show how beautiful and modern piping has come along in recent years.  Luckily, my client went with my idea & even liked my suggestion for a word topper, which I custom ordered from Cyn Details on Etsy, which is a local San Diego mother-owned company like mine!

The client went for my handmade fondant sugar roses instead of real roses, which I didn’t mind because I wanted to practice those!  They came out beautifully!  I brushed them with luster dust to help make them look more realistic.

This cake had a 10-inch bottom tier of marble cake with Oreo buttercream, and the top two tiers were white cake with fresh raspberry compote and vanilla buttercream.

Thank you, Liz, for hiring me to make this cake!  I hope your Grandmother & everyone liked it!

Circus Birthday Cake

mmc bakes circus carnival cake  This circus cake has to be my favorite design I’ve made so far!  I love the color combination, and how the overall look is pulled together from top to bottom.  The client had approached me needing a circus-themed cake for her son’s 4th birthday, and I responded with several designs I found online that I could simulate.  Most of the time, clients send me photos of how they want their cake to look like, but this time I had free reign!  The client ended up choosing a design similar to that of this final cake, however, the bottom tier is the only part that looks the same.  I like being able to have a picture for inspiration, but have room to make my own design decisions on-the-fly.  The birthday boy preferred a lion cake topper, so I sculpted that first.  This was the first time that I ever sculpted an animal, and I really liked the way it turned out!  So much that I wanted to keep it!  But of course, I didn’t.  Hopefully more animal sculptings are in my future, and I hope they come out as cute as Liam, the lion! This is a two-tier cake with a 10-inch base & 6-inch top, all covered in fondant with extra fondant toppers & decorations.  The bottom tier was the birthday boy’s request of chocolate cake with Oreo buttercream filling.  The top tier was vanilla cake with vanilla bean buttercream & fresh strawberry compote. Thank you, Jennifer, for hiring me to make this cake!  You were a pleasure to work with, and I hope everyone enjoyed this cake!  I really love the photos below sent to me by the client.  How cute was Liam in that circus outfit?  It totally matched the cake!  The dessert table looked amazing, and those carnival signs on the fence were super adorable!  Now I want to throw my littlest one a circus-themed party!

mmc bakes gender reveal cake bee theme baby shower san diego Surprising friends and family with a gender reveal cake can be so much FUN!  I know this because that’s the same way I chose to share the gender of my first child.  A baby is such a blessing, and throwing a gender reveal party is a special way to celebrate by making that big announcement with loved ones. I was thrilled to be a part of this bee-themed gender reveal baby shower.  What a clever theme, because yellow is a gender-neutral color when it comes to baby clothing, and apparently there are a lot of cute things you can do with bees! This is a single-tier 10-inch blue vanilla cake with sweet cream cheese and a nice layer of leche flan in the center.  The little edible bees & flowers are hand-sculpted fondant, and the cake is covered in buttercream.  The client chose the perfect words, “He or She, what will it Bee?” In the end, after seeing the client’s photos of their beautiful dessert table with bee cupcakes, honey favors, and other matching goodies, it was truly an honor to hear from the “Mommy-to-Bee” that the cake pulled everything together!  Compliments like that are exactly why I love making cakes! Congratulations Kelly & Michael, and thank you for allowing me to make your special cake!  YAY Team BLUE!!! Below are photos taken by the client; my favorite is the one where the happy parents are kissing and holding the slice of blue cake!
