Graduation Cake – Reach for the Stars

I really enjoyed creating and making this custom graduation cake for a local kindergarten graduation event!  Based on what my client was looking for to match her “Reach for the Stars” theme, and the approximately 100 people she needed to serve, I designed this cake from scratch, so I’m really proud of it.  Typically clients send me photos of what they want their cake to look like, however with this one, I had some better ideas in mind that I pitched.  I’m glad my client went for them, because I think it turned out great! This three-tier cake consisted of a 12″ base tier of chocolate cake with Oreo buttercream.  The middle tier was a 10″, and the top was about a 9″ globe, which consisted of rainbow cake filled with strawberry jam & vanilla mousse buttercream.  All of it was covered in buttercream, except the globe was covered in fondant.  I hand-painted each of the little kids in cap & gowns, which were made of gum paste and fondant.  There were eleven kids graduating from this school, so luckily I was able to create a fondant figure to model each kid, so they can either eat it, or take it home and save it as keepsake!  Everything was edible on this cake, except for the wires holding up the shooting stars. A big thank you to Sandra for hiring me to make this cake for her special event!

Shopkins Wishes Cake

Last weekend I had the pleasure of making this Shopkins Wishes cake for Emme’s 7th birthday.  This has to be one of my favorite cakes I’ve made so far because I love how it’s colorful and FUN!  This cake also gave me a great opportunity to showcase my new ability to produce edible images that I custom make and print with edible ink.

shopkins wishes cake, mmc bakes, san diego, chula vista, custom cakes, fondant, shopkins cake, shopkins birthday, wishes cake To be honest, I was quite intimidated by the looks of this cake because of all of the details, but in the end, sculpting everything went pretty seamlessly…some cake designs give me a really hard time & I stress out!  My client Peggy provided me with a photo of a Shopkins Wishes cake, but allowed me to use some creative freedom on the bottom tier.  That was great because sometimes I look at other cakes, the toys, logo, etc. for inspiration.  After custom-making the name using a font similar to the Shopkins logo, I added the bunting in edible images. I placed tiny little fondant shapes allover the cake like confetti similar to Shopkins packaging.  You can also see my inspiration on that cute backdrop behind Emme in the photo provided by my client below.  What a perfect dessert table!  I see beautiful decorated sugar cookies & cake pops, Filipino pecan tarts (YUM), cookies and donuts.  Such a lovely theme…now I want to throw myself a Shopkins party! This was a two-tier 6″ & 8″.  The top tier of the cake was lemon with raspberry buttercream, and the bottom tier was rainbow swirl with vanilla buttercream…kids love a colorful cake and so do I! Review: “The cake was delicious, moist and so pretty!  Everyone loved it! Thank you!” – Peggy (via text) Thanks Peggy for your cake order, sending me photos, and your kind feedback!  I really enjoyed making this cake!  Happy 7th Birthday, Emme! shopkins wishes cake, mmc bakes, san diego, chula vista, custom cakes, fondant, shopkins cake, shopkins birthday, wishes cake
